Well this is super involved but a simple concept. My engine needed a transmission and the transmission needed a transfer case.  The transmission need to be adapted to fit the transfer case. Luckily Novak Adapters makes this possible. You can do this in your garage. These SM465's are a simple trans. They included beautiful instructions and I'm not going to repeat all that here. If you're going to do it, have faith the instructions and a couple required tools and you can do it at home.Tools and parts you'll need:

  1. Snap ring pliers (good ones)
  2. Decent set of bearing/gear pullers (atleast 10")
  3. Hydraulic shop press
  4. RTV sealant
  5. 3 Qts of 80w-90 gear oil for the SM-465
  6. Time/patience
  7. Oh and of course the adapter kit from Novak

I went ahead and order their hydraulic retrofit kit. This just made my life easier. Not to mention it came with new parts and saved time by not having to estimate the correct throw for the clutch fork.SM465 Trans and np231 t-case back from the shopLessons Learned

  • 2nd gear shaft bushing is nearly impossible to re-use.
  • Either order the 2nd gear shaft bushing or the entire rebuild kit when you buy the adapter.. You'll need it.
  • This is a tough and heavy job.
  • Lock rings are not "snap" rings. They are your worst nightmare.
  • I ended up having my local trans shop (Gene's Transmissions) finish the job for me.
