Wiring the 4BT

This is an area of mystery for most folks until they do the research. The Haynes manuals only provides so much. I had a lot of trouble finding consistent answers on the subject believe me.  Let me be the first to say once I 'got it', it was the simplest task in the project.  I would compare it to wiring a radio. So here's the components to wire. Starter, fuel solenoid, starter relay, battery, alternator.STARTERThe starter you can wire up using the same wires of the jeep. You need a power cable straight from the positive post on the battery, then a key-start power from the harness to the starter solenoid. These are already in place to use.. re-use them for the 4BT!FUEL SHUT-OFF SOLENOIDThe fuel solenoid just needs 1 wire. Yeup, 1 wire.  That wire should come from a 12v key-on (constant) power source. Not a key-on accessories source. An accessory source will be temporarily shut off during start or 'engine cranking'.I found this under the hood in the power dist box in an empty relay slot. I wired in a 10Amp fuse here too.ALTERNATORThe alternator is pretty simple. I had a 3-wire GM style alternator. This has 3 terminals on it. 2 on the side and one post on the rear. The post on the rear is the charging wire. The other two are a exciter wire and power wire. This style alternator just like a light bulb needs to be turned on. The two prongs on the side need to be wired. One directly to the positive post and the other to a key-on accessory. I used a piggy back fuse for the alternator key-on behind the glove box.GAUGESI saved the oil and temp gauges for another post: GAUGESLessons Learned

  • For the fuel solenoid. Make sure your 'key-on' power source is constant even during cranking.. it can't be a key-on accessory.
  • I had to turn my battery 90 degrees to fit the wiring in and keep everything away from the turbo.
